Che bello - Wouldn't it be nice

[English version below]

È ovviamente difficile in entrambi i casi.

(Foreword: much of what I write is inspired by the book Sapiens, by Harari, and I didn’t even finish that. - Thanks, you,)

Wouldn’t it be nice, it chickens didn’t have sensations? We would not feel guilty making them live in minuscule cages, discarding the imperfect chicks, grinding them alive.

It would be nice, if dairy cows didn’t have feelings: we would be way more peaceful while taking their newborn calves away from them.

Wouldn’t it be nice, if pigs weren’t intelligent mammals? It would be totally legitimate to close them in such a small space that they cannot move.

It would be nice, if avocados and quinoa, just to make an example, didn’t have such a big environmental and social price1; if moving esotic fruits and vegetables didn’t require fuel.

So nice, if using the car, heating up our houses, taking a pleasant hot shower didn’t pollute.

So nice, if the colourflul glass bottle that contain the fluids of fun, or the jam jars didn’t require so high temperatures to be melted and produced, and weren’t so heavy during transportation.

So nice, someone used to think for sure, if the racist theories were right; or if at least these slaves deported from Africa didn’t suffer so much in plantations, just to bring sugar to us Europeans; if (back to us contemporary people) a smartphone wasn’t produced with materials mined by children workers, in very bad working conditions3.

Shortly: so nice, if our “Western” life conditions didn’t depend, almost parassitically, on exploiting other animals and human beings4; so nice, if they weren’t a burden for the environment in which we (and especially our descendants) will have to live.

Yet

Yet, we like meat, cheese is good, avocados are tasty and so cool, cars are comfortable and cold showers are uncomfortable. Without alcool you don’t have fun at parties5. Don’t even talk about doing without the newest smarpthone.

Yet, essentially we don’t care; maybe we know that, but so bad to think about it, otherwise the house of cards falls down. I find it interesting, that our society is based on indifference; exploiting, yes, but trying to keep it away from our eyes (is it so different from what the neighbours of lagers did? And we are so ready to criticise them). It is the way we found to live in a comfortable society, we need to believe that we are good; and, on a small scale, maybe we even are.

Even more interesting: we also ignore the damage we make to ourselves, so strong is the evolutionary advantage for our species. I like thinking about which beliefs we have developed, which automatisms, in order to reach this addiction; and about how various they are in different people: maybe both the most persuaded broker and the most critical anarchist serve the same mechanism.

Complementary color

Our society is based upon capitalism, and upon a very ruthless version of it, even towards ourselves (except for creating, around us, some happy islands of let’s call it generically welfare). What I mean is: it is not useful to say something is bad, if one is not willing to do without its consequences; or to propose concrete alternatives, which for me means that they have both to work and to be reachable. I mean that, given the present situation, it is not sufficient to imagine a different system, if one is not able to explain how the transition can happen. Moreover, the transition must be, let’s talk chemistry, energetically favourable: in a complex system as a society is, more “vicious circles” (or virtuous), so that taking certain decisions makes them easier to be taken.

Let’s think about that with the concept of evolution: if we take two companies, the first choosing the action A and the second the action B, if moreover the action A gives an economical advantage on the other, during a crisis it is more probable that the secon company closes, so that A become the most common practice. Imagine that we persuade this company to change its practice: probably another company will overcome it.

If A doesn’t correspond to our moral system, we can either find a third action, at least favorable as much, but ethical, or change the system in which this action lives, such that B becomes more favourable. It is of course difficult in both cases.

I will close here, blending on grey, because in the end I am a bit of an utopist as well: it is ok to criticise (constructively), it is ok to think about alternatives for a better (subjectively, remember); but don’t expect that a practice wins over another just because it better matches one’s moral system (that’s what “ethical” means, in the end).
